“I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers”, Anne Shirley, Lucy Maud Montgomery’s beloved literary character once said. I agree. I truly love the beautiful colours of this season. Perhaps Autumn is God’s greatest masterpiece. Leaves that were once strong and vibrant green turn glorious shades of red, yellow and orange. The bright leaves dance as if to bid farewell before being carried off by the wind, an emblem of long cold nights that surely lie ahead. Yet, the night is not everlasting. Spring will return, and with it bright green leaves, strengthened by the sun will emerge, taking the place of the leaves of last year, and standing strongly in the trees.
The seasons of life are akin. As believers from generations before our own bid farewell, carried off into the arms of our Lord, I wonder who is there to take their place? Is it you? When the Lord asked who would serve Him, Isaiah’s response in his day was, “Here am I; send me.” Are you willing to emerge, strengthened by the Son to be used of the Lord in this generation? We can allow the new life of Christ to shine vibrantly in us, and shine as the great cloud of witnesses of past generations did before us, after the example of the Author and Finisher of our faith. That the Great Commission, dispensed to every generation might be the mission of our hearts, to His glory always. “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” (Matt. 28:19-20)
